Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa Fire Department responded to a second apartment fire at Eaton Square Apartments near 61st Street and South Memorial Drive after officials said both fires at the property were caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
According to the department, crews from Station 28 and other District 5 units responded to the fire around 3 p.m. The blaze was spreading between the second and third floors when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters evacuated the building and brought the fire under control, limiting damage to approximately three apartments. Officials said no serious injuries were reported.
The department noted that crews had already responded to another fire at the same apartment complex earlier in the day. While the incidents occurred in different buildings and were not connected, investigators determined both fires had the same preventable cause involving discarded smoking materials.
Fire officials also warned that strong winds across Tulsa created elevated fire danger conditions, increasing the risk that small sparks or heat sources could quickly spread into larger fires.
The department urged residents to use caution when smoking, grilling, welding, or participating in activities involving open flames or sparks during windy conditions.
Officials also stressed the importance of properly disposing of smoking materials in sturdy, non-combustible containers and ensuring they are fully extinguished before disposal.
The department said the outcome could have been significantly worse had the fire started overnight when smoke and flames may not have been immediately noticed by residents.
